As we enter this game, things are pretty close at the top. Seven points separate the top four, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at the lower end of that group — though the top top have already played this weekend. Barcelona currently occupy fourth spot on 31 points, with nine wins from their 14 games so far, the fewest of the top four. They have only lost once, beaten by Real Madrid in the Clasico at the end of October, but they’ve bounced back well. First Barcelona beat Real Sociedad before claiming a second victory over Alaves. However, last weekend they did have to rely on a late own goal to secure a draw against Rayo Vallecano.
Atletico Madrid are third, above Barcelona on goal difference though head-to-head points will be the tiebreaker once the season ends. Things were a bit rockier for Atletico Madrid at the start of the campaign as they lost to Valencia and drew with Real Betis in their opening four games, though the two victories did include a 7-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano.
