However, when you consider that Atletico Madrid have won just two of their last nine matches across all competitions and fell to a miserable 2-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Cadiz on Saturday, the odds swing even further toward the Italian side.
Indeed, Inter are full of confidence after seeing off surprise package Bologna at the weekend, taking another step in their procession toward the Serie A title.
“We showed the right spirit to get a vital win. And it will help us a lot for preparing for a hugely important match on Wednesday,” veteran defender Matteo Darmian said after the 1-0 away victory.
However, Darmian and his Inter teammates are still well aware of the threat Atletico can pose — especially in front of their own fans — and will not be taking Diego Simeone’s men lightly, despite the stark contrast in form between the two teams.
“We have to respect everything about them,” Darmian said. “They’re a strong team regardless of the fact that they’re in a moment of bad form right now.”
The former Manchester United defender added: “I didn’t know they lost today. But Wednesday’s match is what matters. And we have to respect everything about them – the top-class players they have, the intense atmosphere at the stadium.”
