Diego Simeone names Dortmund as ‘hardest’ team Atletico Madrid could have drawn in Champions League quarter-finals
For many, this particular draw was seen as giving two of the remaining Champions League outsiders a great shot at reaching the semi-finals, avoiding the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid. However, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone doesn’t see it that way. In fact, the Argentine believes Dortmund are the ‘hardest’ team his side could have drawn, citing BVB’s away record — not losing on the road in any competition since December 6th — as evidence.
“They have a lot of good qualities,” Simeone told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “They are the hardest opponent. They’ve not lost away from home in four months, and they are great on the counter-attack.
“They are very strong in both boxes, and they are the most intense team in the last eight of the competition.”
Dortmund boss Edin Terzic — who has come under serious pressure at various points this season with his side underperforming and sitting fifth in the Bundesliga — has also been keen to praise Atletico Madrid. He knows just how difficult it is to get a result from Simeone’s men.
“The play that makes Atletico Madrid so successful is well known,” he said. “They have implemented a new art of defending. It’s not easy for any team in the world here.”
