  • Both teams have scored in five of Aston Villa’s last six Premier League home games.

  • Aston Villa have conceded the first goal in three of their last four Premier League home matches.

Villa looking to bounce back

Aston Villa return from the international break fourth in the Premier League, but they aren’t comfortable. The Villans are three points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand. If Tottenham were to win that match by two or more goals, they would leapfrog Villa on goal difference. So Villa have to ensure they keep scoring goals and don’t drop points.

But Villa have dropped points of late. After a three-match winning run which saw Villa beat Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Luton, Unai Emery’s side are winless in two. It started with a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Tottenham — at Villa Park no less. Then Villa drew 1-1 with West Ham before the international break, failing to truly capitalise on Tottenham losing against Fulham.

Wolves, meanwhile, may harbour European hopes of their own. Champions League football is out of the question, but Wolves are in with a chance of qualifying for the Europa Conference League. That spot is currently reserved for sixth place, and Wolves are just six points behind Manchester United. But it could also drop down to seventh — or even eighth — and that looks a lot better. Wolves are just three points behind seventh-placed West Ham, and one off Brighton in eighth.

Gary O’Neil’s side have been in good form of late, winning four of their past six Premier League matches. Two of those wins came against Chelsea and Tottenham, while Sheffield United and Fulham also fell. But it hasn’t been perfect. During that run, Wolves have also lost to Brentford and Newcastle United, which has hampered them.

Villa Park has been the place to be of late. Across all competitions, each of Aston Villa’s past three home games have seen at least four goals scored. There was a 4-0 win for Villa over Ajax and a 4-2 victory against Nottingham Forest, either side of the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Villa Park isn’t the fortress it had been at the start of the season, but Aston Villa are still a formidable side. And that’s represented in the odds, with the Villans favourites for this Midlands clash. Wolves, however, shouldn’t be taken lightly as they have felled a few big names this season.
