Aston Villa’s home woes

It’s not too long ago that we were talking about Fortress Villa Park. Aston Villa had won their first eight Premier League home games this season and then went unbeaten in 10, with the only blemish a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United. Even across all competitions, there had been one defeat and one draw from their first 15 home games. But the wheels have fallen off, the walls have come crumbling down and so on.

The run started with a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League, a result that shocked Villa Park, as the Magpies hadn’t been great on the road. It was then followed by another shock 3-1 defeat, this time in the FA Cup to Chelsea. And the third defeat in a row came at the hands of Manchester United, though tiredness and injuries are certainly playing a part.

But Nottingham Forest don’t look like a side capable of adding to Aston Villa’s misery. Fighting against relegation, the Tricky Trees have picked up just one win in their last five having enjoyed a mini boost following the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo. That victory did come last time out against West Ham however, with goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi securing all three points against the Hammers at the City Ground.

Away from home, Forest haven’t been the best. They have won just two games in normal time, adding a third victory after extra-time against Blackpool in the FA Cup. That means there have been 12 games away from home that Forest haven’t won, including seven defeats.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, have lost just one of their last 14 home league games against Nottingham Forest (W7 D6) and are unbeaten in seven since a 2-0 loss in October 1994.

Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest match tip

Half time draw @ 7/5 by BetVictor

One of the reasons behind Nottingham Forest’s struggles away from home this season has been their slow starts. The Reds have only led at the break in one of their 12 Premier League away games this season, trailing four times. Of course, that means Forest have been level at the break on seven occasions. Four of those have come in each of Forest’s past four away games, which have all been 1-1 at half-time.

*Odds correct as of 19:30 on February 23

Despite Aston Villa’s slight wobble at home, they are pretty firm favourites for this game. Nottingham Forest did win the previous meeting this season, claiming a 2-0 victory at the City Ground, but they are winless in their past seven trips to Villa Park. Not since Stuart Pearce and Steve Stone scored in October 1994 have Forest tasted victory away to Aston Villa, losing this fixture 2-0 last season.
