The appointment of Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa who are set to play European football this season. Threatened with relegation he’s steered the Birmingham-based side into calmer waters and there’s a renewed sense of optimism at the former European Cup holders. Villa ended strong at home last season having won their last seven in a row (scoring 14 goals while only conceding twice).

However, this season hasn’t started well. Villa have lost Emiliano Buendía and Tyrone Mings to injury and were humbled 5-1 by Newcastle on Premier League opening weekend. Moussa Diaby scored Aston Villa’s consolation goal. Only four players have scored in their first two Premier League appearances for Villa – Dalian Atkinson (1992), Dion Dublin (1998), Ross Barkley (2020) and Danny Ings (2021).

Everton, meanwhile, headed into the final day of last term unsure whether they’ll be in the Premier League this season. Sean Dyche managed to get them across the line but the ex-Burnley boss is hoping for a more straightforward campaign. Everton lost seven of their most recent 15 away matches while claiming one win.

Dyche counted his Everton side unlucky as they fell to a 1-0 loss to Fulham at home last time out. In that game, Ashley Young became the Toffees’ oldest outfield Premier League player (38 years, 34 days) since Richard Gough in 2001, who was 39. Young has more Premier League assists at Villa Park than any other player (28), with one of those coming as an opposition player for Man Utd in 2014/15.
