Villa’s flawless start to the season at home came crashing down in midweek, as they were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the third round by struggling Everton at Villa Park. The Villians had won each of their opening three home matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding just once, but were shocked by the same side they beat 4-0 just one month ago.
However, in the Premier League, Unai Emery has revitalised the side since taking over from Steven Gerrard, with only Man City (71) picking up more points in the English top flight in 2023 than Villa (55). Since a three-game losing run against Leicester, Man City and Arsenal in February, Aston Villa have won 14 of their last 21 Premier League games (D3 L4). In this timeframe (February 25th onwards), only Manchester City (55) and Liverpool (48) have won more points in the division than Villa (45).
Brighton, meanwhile have won both of their Premier League away games so far in 2023/24, following up a 4-1 win over Wolves with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United, ending their 31-game unbeaten streak at Old Trafford. However, like Villa, the Seagulls were dumped out of the League Cup in round three, falling to a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after Nico Jackson’s only goal of the game.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side also have a poor recent record against Aston Villa, having lost each of the last four matches against them, conceding 2+ goals each time. The Seagulls have also lost four of their previous five trips to Villa Park (D1).

|–||Jakub Moder, Julio Enciso||James Milner, Pascal Gross, Evan Ferguson|
Both Jakub Moder and Julio Enciso miss out once again for the Seagulls, while Pascal Gross and James Milner are doubts after missing the League Cup tie against Chelsea. Evan Ferguson will be hoping for a return.
Carlos Baleba made his debut for the club against Chelsea in midweek after signing from Lille in the summer, but Roberto De Zerbi doesn’t think the midfielder is quite ready for the Premier League.
“He is [born in] 2004 and it was the first game at this level at Stamford Bridge and I am pleased for his performance. Clearly he has to improve and progress. Maybe now he is not so ready to play in first XI.” The Italian said after the game.
“You are used to watching Premier League and the other European leagues are totally different. “The Premier League is stronger and tougher and the new players have to adapt in the difficulties of the game. “We lost Pascal Gross and [James] Milner and so in that position we only have three midfielders but the players and coach have to adapt in this moment. “We play a lot of games, I don’t want to make an excuse but the young players they must… (clicks his fingers quickly) progress.”
