Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich prediction and stats: Champions League football returns to Villa Park

Champions League football makes its long-awaited return to Villa Park as Aston Villa host Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Both sides won their first games of the new league phase and will be looking to keep up with the leaders of the early table.

Harry Kane to score last (100/30 with Sky Bet)

Harry Kane will be looking forward to his return to Villa Park. The Englishman has scored five goals in six career appearances at Villa Park. He’s also scored the game-winning goal at Villa Park on two previous occasions, a 90th-minute winner in November 2014 and both goals in a 2-0 win for Tottenham Hotspur in March 2016.

Amadou Onana to have five or more foul involvements (3/1 with Betfair)

Amadou Onana was a busy man in Aston Villa’s win over Young Boys last time out. The Belgian midfielder conceded four fouls, more than any other Villa player. He also won two fouls, the second-most among his teammates.

Aston Villa haven’t been at Europe’s top table since 1982-82, when they reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup as defending champions. They bowed out with a 5-2 aggregate defeat to Juventus, who would make it to the final. The first leg came at Villa Park, a 2-1 loss for Aston Villa — their last European Cup home game for over 40 years.

But now it’s back, and there’s a big opponent waiting. Aston Villa made their return to the top level of European football last time out and looked good in their 3-0 win over Young Boys. Despite their European Cup history, this was Villa’s first taste of Champions League football in its current guise. So, Villa will be looking to become just the second English team to win their first two matches in the Champions League, after Leicester City in 2015-16.

Bayern Munich were dominant in their first Champions League game of the season, thumping Dinamo Zagreb 9-2. They had 19 shots on target, the most by a team in a single Champions League game since 2003-04. It’s part of a fine start to life as Bayern manager for Vincent Kompany.

The former Burnley boss is still unbeaten after seven games in charge of Bayern, winning six. It’s a run that sees Bayern top of the Bundesliga table and through to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. They dropped their first points of the season at the weekend, drawing 1-1 with defending German champions Bayer Leverkusen in the league.

Aston Villa team news

Matty Cash is closing in on a return but will miss out for this game. John McGinn has also been ruled out, and isn’t expected back until after the international break.

Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara also miss out through injury.

Bayern Munich team news

There was a worry about the availability of Harry Kane for this game. The Englishman picked up a knock in Bayern’s draw with Leverkusen at the weekend, and had to be replaced. But Kompany has confirmed that Kane trained with the Bayern squad and looks in line to play barring any late problems.

Bayern will remain without Josip Stanisic, Sacha Boey, Tarek Buchmann and Hiriko Ito, though.

Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich head-to-head

This will be just the second competitive meeting between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich. Villa won the only previous matchup, a 1-0 victory in the 1982 European Cup final.
