Aston Villa have been the surprise team of the season so far in the Premier League. Unai Emery’s men go into this weekend in third with 31 points after completely dominating defending champions Manchester City in midweek, allowing them just two shots and none after the 11th minute of the game as Leon Bailey’s strike handed them all three points. The Villains are on an incredible run at home, winning each of the last 14 matches and another three points against the Gunners would see them win 15 on the bounce at Villa Park for the first time in their history.
Arsenal, meanwhile, made it six consecutive wins across all competitions with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Luton at Kenilworth Road to stay top of the Premier League table. After re-taking the lead just before HT through Gabriel Jesus, many thought Arsenal would stroll to their 11th league win of the campaign, but Luton weren’t giving up. Two goals in eight second-half minutes saw them turn the game on it’s head to lead 3-2, before Kai Havertz made it 3-3 in the 60th minute and a Declan Rice strike in the sixth minute of added-on time turned the game into Arsenal’s favour once more. That result meant that since the start of last season, Arsenal have won more away games (17) and more away points (55) than any other Premier League side. The Gunners have also conceded fewer goals on the road than any other ever-present side in that time (24).
This match, of course, brings together two Basque tacticians working wonders with their respective squads, with Emery in particular drawing praise for how he’s turned around Villa’s fortunes in such a short space of time. That has not gone unnoticed by his compatriot.
“They are going to be a tough opponent and it is one of my favourite grounds… (It’s) no surprise. I have followed him since he was coach of Almeria and what he has done at every team is remarkable,” Arteta said of Emery in his pre-match press conference. “He has always improved the players, the team and the club. He is Basque like I am. I really admire him. I am really happy for him.”
