It was another agonising end to a Premier League season for Arsenal in May. Having led the title race late into the campaign, the Gunners eventually succumbed to the machine that is Manchester City. This time around, Arsenal lost the title by just two points, despite winning eight of their final 10 games. One of those failures to win was a 1-1 draw with Man City, before a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa proved the most costly.

But there were reasons to be optimistic. First and foremost, Arsenal proved that their previous title challenge wasn’t a fluke. They’re here to stay. And Mikel Arteta can only build on two impressive seasons, hoping this is the year Man City finally slip up.

Wolves, meanwhile, finished 14th in the table in Gary O’Neil’s first season in charge. But there was certainly reason to be happy. Wolves struggled with a lot of injuries last season, to key players in key moments, and they only really tailed off towards the end of the campaign once safety was secured.

O’Neil didn’t even get a pre-season with Wolves either, replacing Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the new campaign. So now, with a full summer under his belt and some depth added to the squad, there will be hope that O’Neil can lift Wolves up the table once more.

Arsenal host Wolves at 3pm on Saturday 17th August at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal’s title challenge last season was built partly on their fantastic defence. The Gunners kept more clean sheets than any other team and also conceded fewer goals in the Premier League. They have also won each of their past six games against Wolves, keeping clean sheets in four of those victories.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal have made David Raya’s loan move permanent so he will remain the Gunners’ first-choice goalkeeper. There haven’t been any significant changes to Arsenal’s team over the summer, but they will hope to have Jurrien Timber fully fit for the start of the new season.

Wolves team news

Wolves have been busy this summer. They’ve brought in four new players including striker Jorgen Strand Larsen on loan from Celta Vigo, and he could lead the line after a good campaign in La Liga. But they also said goodbye to Max Kilman, forcing a change to the backline. Nelson Semedo will miss this game through suspension after his red card against Liverpool on the final day of the season.

Arsenal vs Wolves head-to-head

Arsenal are enjoying their time against Wolves right now, winning each of the past six matches. It came after Wolves did the double over Arsenal in the 2020/21 campaign as part of a wider run that saw the Gunners win one in six.
