A battle for London supremacy

Although Chelsea are struggling down in ninth in the Premier League, when it comes to the London mini-league they are second. And they’ll be hoping to use that record to derail rivals Arsenal’s title hopes. The Blues have won five of their nine Premier League London derbies so far this season, drawing twice and losing twice. The defeats have come to Brentford and West Ham, alongside draws to Brentford and Arsenal.

The one team sitting above Chelsea in the London mini-league are Arsenal. The Gunners have won five of their 10 London derbies in the league, with three draws and two defeats — losing to Fulham and West Ham, while drawing with the Cottagers, Tottenham and Chelsea. But, more importantly, Arsenal are also the highest-ranked London club in the actual table.

Arsenal are still challenging for the title but they missed the opportunity to take charge of the race with a defeat against Aston Villa, having watched Liverpool drop points in their loss to Crystal Palace. Of course, the Gunners bounced back with a 2-0 win at Wolves on Saturday while City were celebrating their FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea. That puts Mikel Arteta’s men top of the table again, at least temporarily, one point clear of City and ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are in ninth but have an outside chance of qualifying for European football. At the moment they are three points behind sixth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand over the Magpies and also the same distance from Manchester United in seventh. The Red Devils may be more reachable for Chelsea, as the Blues boosted their goal difference with the 6-0 win over Everton.

Arsenal vs Chelsea match tip

Arsenal to win and BTTS @ 8/5 by BetGoodwin

Although Chelsea led 2-0 when these sides met at Stamford Bridge in October, the Blues were unable to hold onto their advantage, eventually having to settle for a 2-2 draw. It extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run against Chelsea to four games, with three wins for the Gunners. Chelsea have found some form in front of goal, however, scoring in each of their past 15 league games. They’ve scored 61 goals in their 31 games, but have also conceded 52. As our Comparison Matrix below shows, Arsenal come out on top in the important metrics.

Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal’s ‘little magician’ Leandro Trossard

Hitting form at the perfect time, Leandro Trossard was the driving force behind Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at Wolves at the weekend, opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time with an excellent strike off the post. It was the Belgian’s third goal in his last five games across all competitions and his 14th of the season overall, which is a remarkable record considering he’s started just 20 of his 41 appearances so far.

“He is a little magician, he can score off any service,” Arteta said. “He is a big threat and he can play in different positions; he is so composed, so cool. It is a joy to have him in the team.”

It should get even better from here, too, with Trossard preparing to face one of his more favoured opponents in Chelsea. The 29-year-old has faced the Blues seven times across his career to date and scored three goals along the way, including in Arsenal’s last meeting with them back in October.

Trossard can be backed at 9/5 with BetMGM to score at any time against Chelsea and will be one of the players keeping Mauricio Pochettino awake most in the coming nights.

Arsenal are the clear favourites for this game, and it’s pretty understandable. The Gunners are in good form in general and haven’t lost to Chelsea since the start of the 2021/22 season. Chelsea have also left Old Trafford, St James’ Park and Anfield with defeats this season, though they did get a draw at the Etihad not too long ago.

Cole Palmer wasn’t involved in training on Monday due to an illness, so there is a chance that he could not be involved if he hasn’t recovered in time, which would be a huge blow for Chelsea. Malo Gusto suffered a knee injury in the FA Cup defeat to Man City, while Ben Chilwell has suffered a recurrence of his knee problem. Christopher Nkunku, Levi Colwill, Robert Sanchez, Reece James and Lesley Ugochukwu remain out, with hopes of returning before the season is up.
