The defence continues
Three years ago, Argentina ended their long wait for a Copa America trophy, concluding 28 years of hurt. But these were an extraordinary 28 years. Before lifting the trophy in 2021, Argentina had been beaten finalists four times between 2004 and 2016, with one quarter-final exit in between. In 2019 they finished third, before finally ending their wait.
The format was slightly different at the 2021 Copa America, but Argentina went unbeaten in their group winning four and drawing one. This time around, Argentina have been perfect so far. La Albiceleste beat Canada, Chile and Peru in the group stages, scoring five goals without conceding. Then, they held their nerve from the penalty spot after a 1-1 draw against Ecuador, booking their place in the semi-finals.
That doesn’t make for good reading for Canada. There will be plenty of celebration among the Canucks for even making it to this stage, and it’s a sure sign of their rapid development as a footballing national. Jesse Marsch’s side recovered well from their opening 2-0 defeat to Argentina, grinding out four points against Peru (1-0) and Chile (0-0) without conceding a goal, before beating Venezuela on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
All of that said, Argentina are heavy favourites here and with Brazil knocked out by Uruguay on the other side of the draw, it’s going to take something special for anyone to stop them from retaining their crown now.
Argentina vs Canada match tip
Lautaro Martinez anytime goalscorer @ 8/5 with Bet365
Lautaro Martinez has been in stunning form this summer, scoring once in each of his four games at Copa America so far to sit top of the Golden Boot race, one ahead of Venezuela’s Salomon Rondon, who is now out of the tournament. The Inter striker has opened the scoring in his last three matches, while he finished the job in Argentina’s opener against Canada, scoring a late goal to make it 2-0 to the holders in Atlanta. It feels almost inevitable that he’ll have a defining say here.
Argentina vs Canada odds
Argentina are unsurprisingly odds-on favourites for this game having cruised through the group stage and made it through the quarter-finals. Their 2-0 win over Canada in the opening match of the tournament will only serve to boost their odds. La Albiceleste are also favourites to win Copa America this year, so will be expected to at least go all the way to the final.
Argentina vs Canada team news
Argentina and Canada managed to make it through the quarter-finals without injury or suspension, and the defending champions will have been happy to see Lionel Messi back in action for that match — even if he did miss in the shootout against Ecuador.
Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David will be vital to Canada’s chances, but they’ve managed just a single goal between them at the tournament so far, scored by the latter in the group stage win over Peru.
