Argentina back on track

If anyone doubted that Argentina deserved to be crowned world champions, La Albiceleste have shut them right up. Since lifting the World Cup at the end of 2022, Argentina have been practically perfect.

Starting with a handful of friendly wins, Argentina returned to competitive action with World Cup qualifying in September 2023, winning their first four games. Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru were all brushed aside, with Argentina stating their claim to be the best team in South America.

The real tests would come in the November international break, and Argentina failed the first one. Goals from Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez sealed a 2-0 win for Uruguay against Argentina, their first defeat since the 2-1 reverse vs Saudi Arabia almost a year prior. But Argentina are proving that the defeat was a minor blip, bouncing back in the best possible way.

In Argentina’s next game, they went to the Maracana to face Brazil and handed the five-time world champions their first ever qualifying home defeat thanks to Nicolas Otamendi’s second-half goal. After the break until March, Argentina returned with a 3-0 win over El Salvador, despite having a number of big names missing.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, have been suffering of late with just four wins since the start of 2023. It saw them lose in the Nations League quarter-finals, beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Panama, as well as exit the Gold Cup at the same hurdle.

Argentina vs Costa Rica match tip

Argentina to win to nil @ 1/1 by Sky Bet

The 2-0 defeat to Uruguay really was a blip. It was the only game since lifting the World Cup that Argentina have failed to win, and also the only match in which they have conceded. La Albiceleste have won their other nine games post-World Cup, all without conceding a goal. In those games, Argentina have won by an aggregate score of 23-0.

Costa Rica’s squad is full of inexperience, with only four players having made more than 20 appearances for the senior squad. There are 12 with fewer than five caps.
