Goals from Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez sealed a 2-0 win for Uruguay against Argentina, their first defeat since the 2-1 reverse vs Saudi Arabia almost a year prior. But Argentina are proving that the defeat was a minor blip, bouncing back in the best possible way.
In Argentina’s next game, they went to the Maracana to face Brazil and handed the five-time world champions their first ever qualifying home defeat thanks to Nicolas Otamendi’s second-half goal. After the break until March, Argentina returned with a 3-0 win over El Salvador, despite having a number of big names missing.
Costa Rica, meanwhile, have been suffering of late with just four wins since the start of 2023. It saw them lose in the Nations League quarter-finals, beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Panama, as well as exit the Gold Cup at the same hurdle.
