Still the second-most successful side in the history of the European Cup, this will be AC Milan’s 20th campaign in the competition since it was rebranded to the Champions League. After being away between 2014/15 and 2020/21, the Rossoneri are now in their third consecutive Champions League campaign, and they’ll be looking for another deep run in the competition. Last season, AC Milan made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to bitter rivals Inter Milan, after a group stage exit in 2021/22.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2002/03 and just the third time overall. In their maiden campaign in 1997/98, Newcastle bowed out at the group stage, having been drawn against Dynamo Kyiv, PSV and Barcelona — beating the latter at St James’ Park thanks to Faustino Asprilla’s hat-trick. Five years later, they reached the second group stage before getting knocked out, with Barcelona getting their revenge alongside Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen. It’s now been 20 years and 184 days since Newcastle’s last Champions League game, the longest gap between two matches for an English side in the competition.

AC Milan vs Newcastle match tip

Over 2.5 goals @ 10/11 with Bet365

AC Milan were thrashed by Inter Milan at the weekend, losing 5-1 to their bitter rivals, a humiliating affair for Stefano Pioli. But for the neutrals it was another goal fest. This season alone, AC Milan’s four matches so far have seen 16 goals scored, with a 2-0 win over Bologna the lowest-scoring affair.

AC Milan vs Newcastle United Bet-Builder tip

Milan to win and BTTS

AC Milan have played just once at home this season (being the away team for the Derby defeat at the weekend), securing a 4-1 win over Torino. At the same time, Newcastle have lost both of their matches on the road in the Premier League. The Magpies have also won just 22% of their Champions League away matches, losing five and drawing the other two, while AC Milan have won their last two Champions League group stage games. However, AC Milan’s defence haven’t been the most stable, with just one clean sheet so far this season.

Pierre Kalulu and Ismaël Bennacer are both ruled out for Milan but top scorer Olivier Giroud should be fine after playing 77 minutes against Inter. Fikayo Tomori missed the defeat through suspension but is okay to feature here.

Joe Willock is missing for Newcastle through a hamstring injury, and he is joined on the sidelines by Emil Krafth and Joelinton. But Sandro Tonali is in line to make his return to Milan just a few months after leaving the club to join Newcastle, having also missed the weekend’s game due to injury.

AC Milan vs Newcastle United head-to-head record

This is the first-ever competitive meeting between Milan and Newcastle – Milan have won just one of their last 11 matches against English sides (two draws and eight losses), though that did come against Spurs in last season’s Champions League (1-0).
