The Europa Conference League may be the continent’s third-rate club competition but it has still produced some excellent fixtures, including this one between two former Champions League/European Cup winners. Hosts Marseille are the more recent Champions League winners, securing the trophy in 1992/93, but they go into this second leg trailing 3-2 after a thrilling opening match.
En route to the semi-finals, Jorge Sampaoli’s men went on an eight-game winning run across all competitions which included a win over Basel and two victories against PAOK but since securing their spot things have taken a turn for the worse. Marseille have now lost three of their past five games across all competitions, a run which started with a 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, all but ending their already slim Ligue 1 title hopes. They go into this game off the back of two straight defeats, losing to Feyenoord and then being beaten 3-0 at the weekend by Lyon.
Feyenoord, on the other hand, are on the up and will be hoping to become the first team to win the European Cup/Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League and the Europa Conference League. And if they do go on to win the Europa Conference League, it’ll have come at the end of a long journey. Feyenoord started their campaign all the way back in July in the second qualifying round, having to beat FC Drita, FC Luzern and Elfsborg before they made it to the group stage.
In total, Feyenoord have played 17 games in the Europa Conference League this season, and have lost just once (in their second-leg against Elfsborg when 5-0 up on aggregate). They go into this game in decent form across all competitions too, winning their past five matches as they are still pushing for a Champions League spot in the Eredivisie.
