After a disastrous start to the season in which they lost their opening two Premier League matches, Man Utd turned things around as they found their footing under Eric ten Hag. Starting with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, the Red Devils won four league games in a row and went into the international break off the back of another big victory over Arsenal – ending the Gunners’ perfect start.
That victory over Arsenal had Man Utd fans confident going into their first game back from the international break against Man City, but the Red Devils were brought back down to earth with a bang. Man Utd were blown away by Man City at the Etihad with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scoring hat-tricks, and Ten Hag’s side only managed to reduce the scoreline to 6-3 after their rivals had taken their foot off the pedal.
Everton, meanwhile, have been slowly climbing up the table after their own poor start to the campaign. Like Man Utd, Everton lost their opening two fixtures against Chelsea and Aston Villa, which had some already questioning their credentials to stay in the Premier League.
Those doubts only grew as Everton went on to draw their next four matches, although unbeaten they were still winless after six games, sitting dangerously close to the relegation zone. But Frank Lampard’s men have started to turn things around, winning their past two matches against West Ham and Southampton to move up to 11th – level on points with rivals Liverpool.
