Everton narrowly avoided relegation last season, securing their Premier League status in their penultimate match coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Goodison Park. It was some level of justification for the appointment of Frank Lampard, with some doubting his capabilities of managing in a relegation battle. The relegation-saving form was built off a good record at Goodison Park including wins over Manchester United and Chelsea.

Richarlison scored the only goal against Chelsea but the Brazilian is at Everton no longer, joining Tottenham Hotspur for £50m – one of 11 departures from Goodison Park, albeit with six of those being loan moves. And some of that Richarlison money has finally been repurposed, with Everton recently signing Dwight McNeil from Burnley for £20m. The Englishman is the second player to join Everton from Burnley, with James Tarkowski also arriving, while Ruben Vinagre has signed on loan from Sporting CP.

Chelsea also had to wait until the final weeks of the season to confirm their spot in the top four having struggled for form towards the end of the campaign. But their third-placed finish ended up being more down to their rivals dropping points than their own performances, as off-field issues appeared to be catching up with them.

The Blues were also rocked by the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers but they have also looked to strengthen with two first-team signings so far. The first was Raheem Sterling for £50m from Manchester City, and he was soon joined by Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, and both will be guaranteed starters for Tuchel as they look to push Man City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

Everton vs Chelsea match stats

Both Everton and Chelsea have good records on the opening weekend of the Premier League, with the Toffees unbeaten in their past 10 such matches since losing 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers in 2011/12. Chelsea, meanwhile, average 2.10 points per game in their opening Premier League matches, with only Manchester United (2.13) having a better average. But, Chelsea are also suffering their longest active losing streak away to a current Premier League side (four).

One man that will be looking to make an impression this weekend is Raheem Sterling, on his official debut against an Everton side that will not forget his Liverpool past. And, unlike Chelsea, Sterling has a decent record at Goodison Park, scoring or assisting in four of his past five Premier League appearances at ground – the one game he didn’t manage to score or assist in saw him play just a minute.
