European champions England were one of three nations to end the group stage perfect alongside Japan and Sweden, winning all three of their matches. It wasn’t an easy ride for Sarina Wiegman’s side, however, with it taking some time for them to truly get up and running. In their tournament opener against Haiti, England needed a retaken Georgia Stanway penalty to take the three points, while Lauren James provided the one moment of magic in a 1-0 win over Denmark. But England really showed up in their final game, thrashing China 6-1 to not only secure passage to the last 16 but also top spot in what has opened up to be a favourable draw — though fans of England’s men team had the same thoughts at the 2018 World Cup.

Although they are 11-time African champions, nobody really expected Nigeria to make it through to the last 16, such was the makeup of their group. The Super Falcons were placed in Group B alongside co-hosts Australia and Olympic champions Canada, both of whom were expected to qualify. But Nigeria showed what they were worth in their opening two matches, holding Canada to a goalless draw and then beating Australia 3-2, with the Matildas only reducing the deficit to one goal deep into injury time. In their final game, a goalless draw with Ireland was enough for Nigeria to qualify for the last 16, finishing second, ahead of Canada.

England Women vs Nigeria Women match tip

Lauren James to score or assist @ 11/10 with SkyBet

Lauren James has been the standard star at the Women’s World Cup for England, truly sparking the Lionesses to life. After scoring the only goal against Denmark, James added another two in the 6-1 win over China as well as recording a hat-trick of assists. The first ever Lionesses player to record a hat-trick of assists at the Women’s World Cup, James has been directly involved in six of England’s eight goals at the tournament so far this summer.

England to win, Lauren James to score or assist, Under 2.5 goals & Alessia Russo 2+ shots on target with Betfair

England will be the favourites to win but it may not be as easy as their victory over China. Nigeria have kept clean sheets in two of their three games so far, shutting out Canada and Ireland. On top of Lauren James’ threat in front of goal, Alessia Russo finally scored against China and has had six shot on target at the World Cup this summer, with only two players managing more.

Keira Walsh is yet to return to training with the rest of the England squad though has been doing some work on her own. The main question for England is whether Wiegman sticks with the 3-5-2 that caused so much damage against China.
