After the men’s side reached the final of Euro 2020 last year, it’s the turn of Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses to try and go one further to bring England their first major trophy since winning the 1966 World Cup. It’s been 10 months since Wiegman took charge of England, replacing Phil Neville via a Hege Riise interim spell and things couldn’t be going any better for the Lionesses.
In 14 games under Wiegman, England remain unbeaten with 12 wins and just two draws (against Canada and Spain in the Arnold Clark Cup) which includes a perfect start to qualifying for the 2023 World Cup which has overlapped preparation for the Euros. England’s recent build up for the Euros has been good too, beating Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland prior to Wednesday’s tournament opener against Austria – before games against Norway and Northern Ireland.
While England were playing friendlies, Austria were fighting hard to qualify for the Euros, placed in a group alongside France, Serbia, North Macedonia and Kazakhstan. Well, we say hard, they had to qualify at least, as Austria made pretty light work of the group finishing second and only dropping points against winners France.
Austria have also performed well in qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, which started last September, winning six of their eight games so far, only drawing with Northern Ireland and losing to England (who they will face again at the Euros). Irene Fuhrmann’s side did lose recently though, beaten 2-1 by Denmark in a pre-Euros friendly before wins over Montenegro and Belgium.

Ellen White is expected to lead the line for England should she be fit, but the Manchester City striker isn’t the Lionesses’ only (or best) source of goals. While White has managed 11 goals since Wiegman took over at England, it’s actually Beth Mead who leads the way with 14 strikes to go with her nine assists – being directly involved in more goals than any other player.
For all their attacking prowess, England have been slow starters under Wiegman, but they are more than making up for it in the second half. Of England’s 84 goals scored under Wiegman (including four own goals) 55 have come after half time compared to 29 before.
