England have already secured qualification to the knockout stages of the U21 Euros, a marked improvement from their showings in 2021 and 2019 when they were knocked out at the group stages with just one win from six games across the two tournaments. Not only are England through to the quarter-finals, but they have also secured top spot, three points clear of second-placed Czech Republic with head-to-head the first tiebreaker.
It’s been a pair of 2-0 wins for Lee Carsley’s men at this summer’s tournament, starting with victory over Czech Republic thanks to goals from Jacob Ramsey and Emile Smith Rowe. Smith Rowe found himself on the scoresheet again last time out against Israel, netting the second in the 2-0 win after Anthony Gordon had opened the scoring.
On the other side of this tie, defending champions Germany are fighting for their lives and must win to even stand a chance of reaching the quarter-finals. Beating Portugal in 2021’s final to win their second U21 Euros in three tournaments, Germany haven’t failed to make it out of the group stage since 2013 and have only done it three times in their previous 13 appearances. In the past four tournaments, Germany have at least reached the semi-finals, going onto the final three times.
But Germany are currently third, still awaiting their first win of the tournament. Germany opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Israel and then lost 2-1 to Germany, a defeat that could prove vital. Czech Republic only need a point against Israel in their final game to qualify for the quarter-finals, while Germany have to beat England and hope Czech Republic lose to overtake them — but Germany will also need to at least match Israel’s margin of victory to guarantee Israel don’t qualify instead.

As mentioned, Emile Smith Rowe has scored in both of England’s games at the U21 Euros so far, one of three players to net more than once at the tournament alongside Switzerland’s Kastriot Imeri and Abel Ruiz of Spain. He’ll be looking to become the first Englishman to score in three consecutive U21 Euros games since Leroy Lita in 2007.
However, with top spot already secured, we could see England take their foot off the pedal slightly to keep their squad fresh for the quarter-finals against Group A runners-up Portugal. At the same time, Germany must win to keep their hopes alive and have scored in both of their matches so far.

England won the most recent meeting between these two sides to end a three-game winning streak for Germany. Although the 2017 clash finished 2-2, Germany won the U21 Euro 2017 semi-final on penalties, with Tammy Abraham and Nathan Redmond missing for England.
