With two games left to play just three points separate top from bottom in Group D, but that doesn’t mean teams cannot secure passage to the next round in this gameweek. Marseille enter gameweek five in second place, one point behind leaders Tottenham and ahead of Sporting CP thanks to their superior head-to-head record.
It’s a good position for Marseille to be in especially after their start to the campaign, losing both of their opening two matches. First they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham thanks to two second-half Richarlison goals, and then Eintracht Frankfurt left the Stade Velodrome with a 1-0 victory. But back-to-back comfortable victories over Sporting mean that a Marseille win here, combined with a Tottenham victory, would seal the French side’s spot in the last 16.
For Eintracht Frankfurt, things are slightly less clear. While they are only three points behind group leaders Tottenham, the German side have to win to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. If they lose they will be out and the Europa League group would also be over if they lost and Sporting beat Tottenham.
Eintracht opened the group stage with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Sporting, with all three goals coming in the second half but they looked to have bounced back in beating Marseille. However, that has been their only victory of the group so far. In their very next game, Eintracht held Tottenham in an extremely boring goalless draw but were unable to repeat the feat in the return fixture, losing 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
