Barcelona’s title hopes came crashing to an end on the weekend. Atletico Madrid’s win against Osasuna put to bed their ambitious hopes of a small miracle taking place to give them the opportunity of lifting the Spanish crown. Although Ronald Koeman’s side were out of the title race regardless of their result, they will still rue the dropped points from their defeat against Celta Vigo.

Eibar’s season is still not over. The Spanish minnows sit bottom with a three-point gap to 17th-placed Huesca. To escape the drop José Luis Mendilibar’s side will require somewhat of a miracle in the form of the sides around them losing as well as beating Barcelona themselves. However, even if results go their way they will require a swing in goal difference with Huesca currently three goals better off.

Koeman’s side are now well and truly out of the title race and they will now be looking over their shoulder at fourth-placed Sevilla. Julen Lopetegui’s side sit just two points behind Barça and despite Champions League football being secured for both sides, Sevilla will certainly have their eyes on finishing above the Spanish powerhouse.

Despite what has been an underwhelming season for Barça, Frenkie de Jong has shone once again. The Dutchman has done what he does best in the middle of the field as he tops the league’s standings for the most successful passes made so far in the 2020/21 campaign. With 2483 successful passes made, it is a drop of almost 100 fewer to the Sergio Busquets (2388) with the second-most in the league. 

Lionel Messi has continued his incredible scoring record this campaign despite the speculation surrounding his future for the majority of the season. With 30 league goals to his name so far this season, Messi has sealed the title as top scorer for the 2020/21 La Liga campaign – barring a miracle Gerard Moreno (23) or Karim Benzema (22), however, we’re sure he will be looking to add another one at least to his tally.
