Derby County will be looking for a fresh start come Sunday following a season filled with controversy regarding their spot in the Championship. Wayne Rooney’s men narrowly avoided relegation to League One in the 2020/21 campaign on the final day of the season and will be hoping they can progress under their young manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men pick up their pre-season preparations with a game against Championship side Derby County as they look to shake off the cobwebs following their summer layoff. United’s last outing served up a huge amount of disappointment after suffering Europa League heartbreak in a penalty shootout defeat against Unai Emery’s Villarreal.
To Rooney’s delight, Solskjaer will be without a lot of his star players on Sunday with many currently enjoying a well-earned break following their efforts in this summer’s European Championship and Copa America, however, this will give some of United’s fringe players the opportunity to prove themselves ahead of the upcoming season.

Although Manchester United will be missing the large majority of their star players, Solskjaer will some experience in defence with Dean Henderson and Aaron Wan-Bissaka available for selection. In addition, Wayne Rooney’s men ended the 2020/21 campaign with the lowest number of goals scored in the Championship with just 36 goals.
Juan Mata’s time at United seems to be coming to its conclusion, however, he will likely be the most senior member of the squad available for selection on Sunday. Naturally, if he plays, he will be on set pieces and penalties which could provide him with a few opportunities on goal.
