England have suffered back-to-back group stage exits at the U21 Euros, falling in 2021 on goals scored in a head-to-head tie with Croatia and Switzerland, having been going through until Domagoj Bradaric’s injury-time consolation strike. Then, England were led by Aidy Boothroyd but he left shortly after the tournament and has since been replaced by Lee Carsley.
Under Carsley, England dropped just five points in qualifying for this season’s tournament, in a draw and defeat against Slovenia, to finish three points clear at the top of their group and sealed automatic qualification. There wasn’t ideal preparation for the tournament, though, as England were beaten 2-0 by Japan earlier this month.
Czech Republic were second in England’s group with seven wins, one draw and two defeats from their 10 games. The two defeats, crucially, came against England and sent Czech Republic to the play-offs, as they weren’t the best second-placed side when taking out results against the bottom teams. So, Czech Republic faced Iceland in a two-legged play-off final, winning 2-1 on aggregate with the job done away from home in the first game.
The victory means Czech Republic are at the U21 Euros for the second consecutive tournament, equalling their best run (they’ve never been in three tournaments in a row). But we won’t belittle Czech Republic as they have won the U21 Euros a lot more recently than England, taking the crown in 2002 with the likes of Petr Cech and Milan Baros in their team.

Czech Republic U21s vs England U21s match stats
When the England squad was announced, there was an initial worry as to where the goals would come from with no outright goalscorer. However, they do have six players with at least three goals for the U21s, including Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer who has four in six. The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship, scoring 11 goals in 22 league matches as they made it to the play-offs.
As mentioned, England conceded twice against Japan in their preparation for this tournament and they have conceded in four of their past six games under Carsley. On top of that, Czech Republic scored against England home and away in qualifying for this summer’s tournament.

England U21s beat Czech Republic U21s home and away in qualifying for this summer’s tournament, and have beaten their opponents four times in total. However, Czech Republic U21s are unbeaten in both games against England U21s in U21 Euros proper, drawing in 2007 and then winning four years later.
