Defending champions Germany’s start to the 2023 U21 European Championships didn’t get off to the ideal start, after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Israel in their opening game of the tournament.
Antonio di Salvo’s side found themselves 1-0 down after just 20 minutes, but centre-back Yann Bisseck brought them level just six minutes later and that was the end of the goals, but not the end of the drama at the Ramaz Shengelia stadium, as Israel were reduced to 10-men just before the break. Germany tried and tried to break down the stubborn Israeli defence but to no avail, having 17 shots and missing five big chances, more than any other side during the first round of matches at the tournament.
They will be looking to get back on track and take home all three points against bottom side Czech Republic, who started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to England. Mustering just two shots on target all game and averaging just 30% possession, it was a match to forget Jan Suchoparek’s men, who have failed to make it out of the group stages in each of their last three tournaments, since their fourth place finish back in 2011.

Across the opening matches of the tournament, only Spain (6) had more big chances than Germany (5) managed against Israel, with the Germans missing all five. They will hope their luck will turn against Czech Republic as the defending champions look to make their mark on the tournament and avoid the embarrassment of heading home in the group stages.
Youssoufa Moukoko had a game to forget against Israel, missing two big chances and a penalty as the Germans struggled to break down their resolute defence. The Dortmund youngster, will be looking to show it was just a one off and get his tournament going and prove himself once more, having already set the records for the youngest goalscorer and the youngest player to score 10 goals in Bundesliga history.
