It’s been a highly concerning World Cup campaign for Belgium, who looked sluggish but got the job done on matchday one against Canada, before recently firing a blank and falling to a 2-0 defeat to Morocco on Sunday. Long-term coach Roberto Martinez must now rally the troops for this tournament-defining showdown.

Indeed Belgium’s World Cup campaign has been fraught with doubt and suspicion. There is a growing concern that Martinez is trying to cling on to Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ from four years ago, but the reality hasn’t allowed his ageing stars to recreate the magic of 2018, leading to some very lukewarm showings.

Croatia, likewise, have flattered to deceive in spells following their World Cup final appearance in 2018. Zlatko Dalic, like Martinez, was in the hotseat four years ago as Croatia felt the full wrath of Kylian Mbappe, but there have been elements of self-doubt and hesitation about the Croats this tournament.

The aptly named Checkered Ones were muzzled against Morocco in a tame 0-0, before going a goal down to Canada last time out. That Alphonso Davies goal did seem to bring them to life as they bounced back to comfortably produce a 4-1 rout, but the warning signs were there and elements of rust have certainly been evident. Will either nation shake it off on Thursday?

Croatia vs Belgium match stats

Romelu Lukaku came off the bench against Morocco last time out, and Martinez will be itching to cast him into the main frame later this week. The nation’s all-time leading scorer has bagged 23 goals in his last 24 appearances for Belgium. In a World Cup-defining match, Martinez will surely roll the dice on the Inter man.

Andrej Kramaric helped himself to a brace against Canada, and he will be the main source of attacking inspiration for Croatia against Belgium. The forgotten Leicester man has reinvented himself in the Bundesliga, and his form at international level has thrust him name into the limelight. Mario Mandzukic was the attacking fulcrum in 2018, and Davor Suker in 1998. Kramaric will be hoping to be the 2022 protagonist.

His 22 Croatia goals puts him joint-sixth in the all-time charts for the nation, only 11 shy of second-placed Mandzukic. A few more in this tournament and that gap will reduce to single digits. He will be relishing the chance to close in on Super Mario.

The last time these two nations met came only last year, so Martinez and Dalic will have at least a modicum of knowledge of each other’s tactical preferences. That particular contest finished 1-0 to Belgium with, surprise surprise, Lukaku getting the only goal of the game.
