Colombia came agonisingly close to securing themselves a spot in the final of this summer’s tournament. However, it was heroics from Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, which denied Reinaldo Rueda’s men of the chance to play Brazil in Sunday’s final. Colombia had only won one game in the group stages of the competition but flexed their muscles in a stunning 4-0 victory against Uruguay in the quarter-final.
Peru produced a valiant effort against Brazil in their semi-final clash. Ricardo Gareca’s side finished second in their group only behind the finalists, Brazil. However, they have proven to be a tough team to beat with just one defeat in the entirety of their group stage games and then their other defeat coming in that semi-final against Brazil – in which they put on a respectable display.
These two sides did actually meet earlier in the competition during the group stages which saw Peru prevail. Gareca’s took the lead in the first half but showed character to bounce back after Colombia equalised in the second half to come away from the game with all three points in the bag.

The two nations have met twice within the space of the last month and on both occasions, the scoreline ended with over 2.5 goals. However, on both occasions, the result was completely different. When the sides met in the group stages of Copa America it was Peru who prevailed with a 2-1 win but in the World Cup Qualifiers, it was Colombia who soared to a comfortable 3-0 win.
In four of Colombia’s last seven games, there has been a goal scored within the first 20 minutes of the game. Those goals have not always come in the favour of Colombia which proved to be the case in the previous meeting between these two sides as Peru took an early lead thanks to Sergio Peña’s 17th-minute goal.
