With three rounds of fixtures still to go in CONMEBOL’s qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, two teams from South America have already secured their spot at the tournament, including Argentina. The 2021 Copa America winners remain unbeaten in their 14 matches so far, winning nine and drawing five to sit four points behind group leaders Brazil. So for their final three (or four if their suspended match with Brazil is replayed) games, Argentina can rest easy to know that they will be at the World Cup later this year. Despite having already qualified ahead of the mini international break, Argentina have gone with a relatively strong squad for their two qualifiers and beat Chile 2-1 thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez – the top scorers among the current squad with 23 and 18 goals respectively.
Colombia, meanwhile, must quickly turn things around if they are to reach the World Cup, currently sitting outside the qualification spots. They went into the current break in the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot, ahead of fifth-placed Peru on goal difference. However, defeat to Peru last time out saw Colombia drop to sixth below Uruguay who now occupy the inter-confederation play-off spot. Despite still being in with a chance of qualifying for the World Cup it has been a really underwhelming campaign for Colombia with only one team (Paraguay) managing fewer wins than their three – and they are now winless in six qualifers.

Colombia are the draw specialists of CONMEBOL in this qualifying campaign, with eight of their 15 games so far finishing level. Too many draws are also what’s keeping Argentina away from Brazil, with five from 14 – including one against Colombia in 2021.
In the previous meeting between these two sides in World Cup qualifying, Argentina scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to take what appeared to be a commanding lead only to let things slip. It wasn’t the only time they had scored inside the opening 10 minutes in the current World Cup qualifying, also managing it against Uruguay, while Colombia have conceded four goals inside 10 minutes.

Colombia go into this game unbeaten in their past four matches against Argentina inside 90 minutes, but the Albiceleste did emerge victorious when the Copa America semi-final ended in a draw last summer en route to winning the tournament. A 2-0 win over Argentina at Copa America in 2019 is Colombia’s only victory in the past 10 meetings.
