Benfica are flying in the Primeira Liga right now and look practically unstoppable en route to the title. The Eagles are eight points clear of second-placed Porto and have dropped points in just three league matches, but that must all be put to one side this week.
Fortunately for Benfica, their league form has carried over to the Champions League and they went unbeaten in a group containing Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. With four wins and two draws they actually topped the group on away goals scored thanks to a thrashing of Maccabi Haifa on the final day. And Benfica continued their good run with a 2-0 victory in their first leg against Club Brugge, leaving the Portuguese side in a strong position ahead of this week’s second leg.
Club Brugge, meanwhile, have been underwhelming in the Belgian Pro League and currently sit fourth, hanging onto their play-offs spot by a thread. Things had been going so well for Club Brugge, especially in the Champions League, keeping five clean in the group stage and thrashing Porto 4-0 – though they still had to settle for second place,
However, the tide turned when Scott Parker took over. The former Fulham and Bournemouth manager succeeded Carl Hoefkens at the end of December and has won just two of his first 11 matches in charge. Sure, six have also ended in draws but the three defeats includes the 2-0 loss in the first leg against Benfica.

Joao Mario has been the unlikely man for goals at Benfica this season, thriving having been moved out to the wing. In the Primeira Liga, the 30-year-old has scored 14 goals and provided five assists so far this season, and he’s carried that form over to the Champions League. Joao Mario has scored in each of his last four Champions League games and will be looking to become the first Benfica player to score in five in a row since Eusebio in 1964.
Brugge’s success in the Champions League this season has mainly been built of their defence, but they will need more than that on Tuesday. However, in the first leg, Brugge had just one shot on target which came in the fifth minute, and four efforts overall.
