Chelsea vs Southampton: Betting tips, predictions, odds & match preview
Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday with Frank Lampard looking to build on his side’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Chelsea vs Southampton: Predictions
Chelsea have had a mixed start to the new Premier League season despite investing heavily during the summer transfer window, and they face a Southampton side on the up after enduring a tentative first few games of 2020/21.
The Blues are still a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde club under Lampard, winning convincingly on the first game of the season against Brighton, before firing a blank against Liverpool and drawing 3-3 with newly-promoted West Brom.
The recent 4-0 thrashing over Crystal Palace should stand them in good stead heading into this contest, particularly after attacking duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz were on target during the international break, while Hakim Ziyech also featured for his national team.
Southampton meanwhile have recovered from their early-season wobble, winning back-to-back games against Burnley and West Brom having suffered defeats to Palace and Tottenham. With the Saints on the march, Chelsea face another tricky tie.

Chelsea vs Southampton: Match Stats
Despite some teething issues this season for Lampard, his side produced a very competent performance against Crystal Palace, with new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy keeping a clean sheet on his debut and Ben Chilwell producing a goal in his first league game.
With Lampard’s new recruits starting to settle in he will now be hoping the likes of Havertz and Werner can begin to make a more noticeable impact in front of goal, particularly the latter who is yet to open his league account but will be full of confidence following his goal for Germany earlier this week.
Southampton are expected to put in a solid showing, but they failed to win three successive games last season (they are on two at the minute), and against one of the ‘Big Six’ already this term, they conceded five. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will likely score, such is Chelsea’s fragility at the back and the form of Danny Ings, but the hosts should have enough to get over the line.
26 December 2019 – Chelsea 0-2 Southampton – Premier League
06 October 2019 – Southampton 1-4 Chelsea – Premier League
02 January 2019 – Chelsea 0-0 Southampton – Premier League
07 October 2018 – Southampton 0-3 Chelsea – Premier League
22 April 2018 – Chelsea 2-0 Southampton – FA Cup
Chelsea boast a solid record against the Saints, winning seven of their last nine games in the Premier League, though the last fixture between these two sides resulted in an away win for Southampton.
That 2-0 defeat for Chelsea, courtesy of goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond came on Boxing Day last year, and Hasenhuttl will certainly be looking to that fixture for some inspiration as he returns to west London.
