Last season brought an end to Man City’s domination of the EFL Cup, the first campaign since 2017/18 that they hadn’t won the competition. In fact, since 2013/14, Man City have won the EFL Cup in six of the past nine campaigns with only Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool breaking their dominance. Overall, only Liverpool have won the EFL Cup on more occasions than Man City, moving one clear thanks to their success last season.

Man City have been fantastic this season, losing just two of their 20 matches across all competitions so far, beaten by Liverpool in the Community Shield and Premier League. However, many other teams have struggled to stop Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut. Since losing to Liverpool in October, Man City have won four of their past five matches only dropping points against Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League draw which still saw them seal their spot in the last 16 of the competition.

With Man City out of the EFL Cup early last season, Chelsea were one of the two teams to benefit by reaching the final, though they were beaten by Liverpool on penalties – a result which would be mimicked in the FA Cup final. It was the second EFL Cup final in four years that Chelsea had contested, and they lost their other appearance also on penalties, this time beaten by Man City in a match remembered now for Kepa Arrizabalaga refusing to come off.

Big things were predicted of Chelsea this season but the Blues have faltered and are looking lost of an identity under Graham Potter, who was brought in to replace Thomas Tuchel. After a good start to life under Potter which saw them go unbeaten in nine matches, Chelsea have now won just two of their past three matches with both victories coming in the Champions League. Domestically they are now without a win in four games, drawing two and losing two, including a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend.

Man City vs Chelsea match stats

One of Chelsea’s problems right now is creating genuine goal-threatening chances. In their past four domestic matches, Chelsea have had a total xG of 3.58, with just 0.29 against Arsenal at the weekend, and only two goals scored.

At the other end of the pitch, Erling Haaland must be licking his lips. The Norwegian returned from injury to score Man City’s winner against Fulham at the weekend and should start against Chelsea, especially as he doesn’t have the World Cup to worry about. Haaland has already scored 23 goals this season with 16 of those coming at the Etihad.
