Defending champions Chelsea will be fairly happy with their start to the new Champions League campaign, with two wins and one defeat from their opening three matches – although the manner of the defeat against Juventus was slightly worrying. They did bounce back, however, in their third game against Malmo, cruising to a 4-0 win over the Swedish side thanks to goals from Andreas Christensen, Kai Havertz and a Jorginho penalty brace. That victory was the third of a six-game unbeaten run for Chelsea which has also included a 7-0 win over Norwich City and 3-0 win away to Newcastle United at the weekend.
Malmo, meanwhile, have had a torrid time in the Champions League so far this season and even demotion to the Europa League looks too much of a task for the Swedish side. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men are bottom of Group H without a point or even a goal, conceding 11 goals in their three matches so far including the aforementioned four against Chelsea last time out. Things are going a lot better in the Allsvenskan with Malmo currently one point clear of Djurgarden at the top of the table thanks to a dramatic 3-2 win over Sirius at the weekend. Malmo are unbeaten in three matches since the defeat to Chelsea and are closing in on the league title with just four games left to play in the Swedish domestic season.

Malmo vs Chelsea: Match Stats
With Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner still out injured, the Chelsea team are expected to share the goals, and they have been doing a good job so far this season with the Blues boasting 17 different goalscorers across all competitions (excluding own goals). Kai Havertz is one of those and only Reece James and Lukaku have scored more than the German who will once again be tasked with leading the line in Lukaku and Werner’s absence.
Malmo are one of three teams yet to score in the Champions League group stage this season but also have the lowest xG, totalling just o.99. At the same time, Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in four of their past five games across all competitions.
20 October 2021: Chelsea 4-0 Malmo – Champions League
21 February 2019: Chelsea 3-0 Malmo – Europa League
14 February 2019: Malmo 1-2 Chelsea – Europa League
Chelsea cruised to victory over Malmo last month, continuing their 100% record against the Swedish side. Prior to this season, the two sides had met just twice, in the last-32 of the 2018/19 Europa League when Chelsea won 5-1 on aggregate en route to winning the competition.
