Chelsea continue to go from strength to strength under Thomas Tuchel and at the weekend they extended their unbeaten start to 2021/22 to seven games. That run started with a penalty shootout victory over Villarreal in the Uefa Super Cup and carried over to the Premier League, with the Blues’ currently leading the table after five games without four wins and a draw including a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. They also started their Champions League defence with a 1-0 win over Zenit, the precursor for Sunday’s 3-0 away victory over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Aston Villa also tasted victory at the weekend, beating Everton 3-0 to move into the top half after of table. The Villans had a shock at the start of the season, losing 3-2 to newly-promoted Watford but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Newcastle. A draw with Brentford preceded the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea (though they were either side of the international) but Aston Villa once again returned to winning ways with the victory over Everton. Unlike Chelsea, Aston Villa have already played in the EFL Cup this season, beating Barrow 6-0 in the second round.
Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Match Stats
With a game against Manchester City on Saturday, Chelsea are likely to rotate on Wednesday but they will still have a number of stars to call upon. One of those is Hakim Ziyech, who was an unused substitute in the 3-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend. The Moroccan international has already scored this season, netting the opening goal in the Super Cup win over Villarreal, and will be looking to use this as his opportunity to become a regular starter.
One of the biggest reasons for Chelsea’s excellent start to the new season has been their defence. The Blues have conceded just two goals in their opening seven games across all competitions, with only one of those coming from open play (against Villarreal in the Super Cup). In that time, Chelsea have kept five clean sheets, including four in the Premier League – and no team has kept more clean sheets than the Blues (15) in Europe’s top five leagues since Tuchel took charge in January.

Chelsea failed to beat Aston Villa last season, drawing at Stamford Bridge and losing at Villa Park on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign – the first handing Thomas Tuchel his first away defeat as Blues boss. But they enacted some form of revenge earlier this month, beating Aston Villa 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to keep their unbeaten start to the campaign going.
