Before Tuesday’s victory over Birmingham, you’d have had to go back to the start of November for the last time Cardiff won a Championship game. Since that victory, Cardiff had lost seven games and drawn five, with a run of four-straight defeats – though three of those came against promotion chasers.
Reading are the latest promotion chaser to face Cardiff, despite being 13th. Things are still so close in the play-off race and the Royals are only six points behind sixth-placed Watford with a game in hand over the Hornets.
However, like Cardiff, they had a rough patch recently which saw them go six games without a victory in the Championship, losing some ground on the play-off spots. Reading did return to winning ways in midweek, beating Rotherham 2-1 to lift themselves up from 18th. Their play-off hopes are far from over.

Sadly for neutrals, it doesn’t look like this game is going to be too exciting in front of goal, with Cardiff and Reading struggling in attack this season. While Reading average just 1.13 goals per game in the Championship this season, Cardiff are rock bottom of that particular ranking with an average of 0.75.
Since making his debut, Mamadou Loum has missed just three matches in the Championship for Reading, all of which have been due to suspension. The Porto loanee is the joint-most carded player in the Championship with 10 yellows and missed Reading’s past two matches for reaching double figures. Paul Ince hopes he’ll have learned from the latest suspension, but Loum is prone to a “silly foul”.

Reading have been dominating this fixture of late with just two defeats in their past 15 game against Cardiff across all competitions. However, the Royals will be looking to do the league double over Cardiff for the first time since 2016/17.
