As hosts, Cameroon were a lot of people’s pre-tournament favourites to win the Africa Cup of Nations, adding what would be a sixth crown and a fourth since 2000 (having won in 2000, 2002 and 2017). Cameroon’s matches have been truly entertaining to watch as they cruised to the final four with four wins from their five matches, truly dominating their opponents on the pitch. In the tournament opener, they came from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 and were the only side to score more than once in the first round of fixtures. That was followed up by a 4-1 thrashing of Ethiopia to secure their spot in the last 16, allowing for a draw with Cape Verde to round off the group. Neutrals may have been against Cameroon in the last 16 as they faced a Comoros side that had to play a left-back in goal, but the hosts had no time for fairytales with a 2-1 victory, followed up by a 2-0 win over Gambia in the quarter-finals.

Only one team has won AFCON more times than Cameroon and that’s Egypt, who are looking for title number eight and also their fourth since 2000, having won in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Like Cameroon, Egypt were among the early favourites but they were rocked by a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in their opening group game. They did recover from the setback, however, with 1-0 victories over Sudan and Guinea-Bissau to secure second spot in Group D. Egypt have also been made to work hard for their spot in the semi-finals, going to extra-time in each of their knockout games so far. In the first they required penalties to knock Ivory Coast out following a goalless draw, with Gabaski saving Eric Bailly’s spot kick, while Trezeguet struck in extra-time against Morocco to win the quarter-final after Mohamed Salah had cancelled out Sofiane Boufal’s opener.

Cameroon vs Egypt: Match Stats

With two excellent attacks on display and both sides looking to reach the final, we may see a less defensive game in this semi-final, especially as Cameroon and Egypt will fancy their chances of outscoring the other. Cameroon are the top scorers of the tournament with 11 goals, and that’s where the goals look likely to come from, with Egypt managing just four.

While Vincent Aboubakar was the man for Cameroon in the group stages, netting five goals in three games (and adding another in the last 16), Karl Toko Ekambi has really stepped up for the hosts in the knockout rounds. Toko Ekambi is just one goal behind Aboubakar in the race for the Golden Boot thanks to three goals in his past two games, netting the opener against Comoros and both in the 2-0 win over Gambia.
