Although they were comfortably above the relegation zone come the end of last season, finishing 11 points clear of 18th-placed Fulham despite finishing just one place higher, Burnley will not have been happy with their 2020/21 campaign. It is a far cry from their seventh-placed finish in 2017/18 that had secured Europa League football and a significant drop from their top-half end just one season before. Burnley’s pre-season went fairly well in terms of preparing for the new campaign with the Clarets winning six of their seven matches, only losing to Cadiz in their final outing.
Two points and one place above Burnley in the Premier League last season were Brighton, who were also fairly underwhelming after showing positive signs on the pitch. Graham Potter’s side were the Premier League’s draw specialists with 14 of their 38 matches ending level, while only the bottom three won fewer games than the Seagulls. Unlikely Burnley, Brighton’s pre-season was brief with regards to official friendlies, as they only played three matches, winning one, drawing one and losing one.
