Just over a month ago, Chelsea were looking fairly comfortable at the top of the Premier League but they now find themselves in third, 13 points behind leaders Manchester City. That gap could have been just seven had things gone differently at the weekend, but Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Man City at the Etihad to extend their poor run in the top flight. Since the start of December, Chelsea have won just two of their eight Premier League matches, losing two with four draws.
It’s arguably the most difficult spell of Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge at Chelsea which is drawing nearer to the one-year mark, replacing Frank Lampard in the final week of January 2021. There have, of course, been a couple of highs in the cups during their poor run, beaten Tottenham Hotspur with ease across two legs to reach the EFL Cup final and a comfortable victory over non-league Chesterfield in the FA Cup, but things need to get back on track in the Premier League.
One of the aforementioned draws in Chelsea’s poor run in December and January came against Brighton, with the Seagulls leaving Stamford Bridge with a point in their final game of 2021 thanks to Danny Welbeck’s late goal. The draw was just another of the big results Brighton have managed this season, also drawing with Arsenal and Liverpool, the latter a 2-2 at Anfield in which they came from two goals down. Coupling the draw and with another stalemate against Crystal Palace and two wins over Brentford and Everton, Brighton are currently unbeaten in four Premier League matches – one of the best runs in the division right now.
As a result of their form, and the fact that only Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have lost more games than their four, Brighton are currently ninth and perhaps keeping their eye on a European spot. With this game being played earlier than scheduled, due to Chelsea’s involvement in the Club World Cup next month, Brighton do have the chance to move up to eighth and put some real pressure on the teams around them.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Match Stats
Since Opta started recorded detailed shot data from the 2003/04 season, only Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have outshot Chelsea in four consecutive Premier League matches. Brighton will be looking to join that trio on Tuesday, having had more shots than Chelsea in each of the past three Premier League meetings. In the previous fixture at Stamford Bridge, Brighton had 18 shots to Chelsea’s 11, and while Leandro Trossard missed that match he has had more shots than any other Seagulls player this season.
Brighton have never led in nine Premier League games against Chelsea, going behind in eight of those games. However, three of the past four matches between these two sides have ended in draws including two games in which Chelsea took the lead. The Blues have also dropped 11 points from winning positions so far this season, with only Crystal Palace, Burnley, Leeds, Southampton and Newcastle dropping more – not company they’d want to keep.
