Saturday afternoon in Brighton, two of the fast starters square off, each with the hopes of keeping alive a red-hot start to the league campaign. Both Brighton and Leeds have taken seven points from their first three Premier League matches, which places them fourth and fifth in table, level on points with Tottenham and Manchester City, and behind only Arsenal.

On paper, Brighton’s fast start looks the more impressive of the two, as the Seagulls have notched away wins over Manchester United and West Ham (I know, I know…) and had the better of Newcastle United in a home opener which ended in a goalless draw. Conversely, Leeds needed a second half own goal in their season opener at home to take full points from Wolves and subsequently blew a 2-0 lead in the final 20 minutes at Southampton and came away with only a point. However, Jesse Marsch’s men have since put forth the most impressive of these teams combined six performances thus far, blowing out Chelsea 3-0 at home, in a game in which the heavily-favored visitors managed just three shots on goal.

Brighton vs Leeds United match stats

The home side are coming off of not only an impressive 2-0 at the London Stadium over West Ham, but also a midweek League Cup match, in which a lineup comprised of backups (and Tariq Lamptey) defeated Forest Green 3-0. Bright have been excellent defensively in these early matches, allowing just a single goal and nine shots on target in three league outings. Of course, that kind of stinginess has been necessary, as the Seagulls themselves have managed just three tallies in the league, all of which have come from midfielders (two for Pascal Gross and one from Alexis MacAllister). They were always going to need to find more in attack as the season wore on, but that needs seems to have become a bit more urgent, as Neal Maupay, scorer of 26 goals over the past three Premier League seasons, is reportedly on his way to Everton.

Nonetheless, given the strong defensive identity of this team in the season’s opening weeks, look for the back line of Dunk, Lamptey, Veltman and Webster, along with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, to leave a mark on this match.

Leeds, meanwhile, are a team whose identity early on (and, in the hopes of Jesse Marsch, going forward)  will be built on aggressiveness and a consistent commitment to attack. Through the first three games, no one on the Leeds squad has more emphatically taken Marsch’s message to heart than Rodrigo. The ex-Valencia man has hit the ground sprinting in 2022-23, netting four times in three games. In addition to the talented Spaniard, of course, Leeds boast the latest American prodigy, Brendan Aaronson.

A skilled, speedy and agile winger who scored the opener against Chelsea, Aaronson was acquired this summer from RB Salzburg for the second-largest transfer fee ever paid for an American player (£24.7 million; Christian Pulicic still holds the top spot, though Aronson does hold the mark for highest fee paid to an MLS team for an American player, of $6-$9 million).

Between Rodrigo, Aronson, Marsch’s general philosophy and the occasional wobble that we;ve seen from Leeds at the back, it seems (and may well be) silly to suggest that goals will not figure prominently into this match. However, given the solidity of Brighton’s back line, combined with the knowledge that their attack at the moment isn’t tailored for high scoring contests, look for Brighton to try to control the game’s tempo and severely limit the opportunities they afford Leeds to build up a head of steam in attack. For as thrilling as the ‘Medford Messi’ (Aaronson was born in Medford, New Jersey, you see) and Rodrigo can be, this Brighton defense is proving itself to be extremely difficult to break down.
