Newcastle have had a miserable start to the Premier League season picking up just five points from their opening 11 games although two of their last three have been drawn. Howe will need to address the defensive issues as only Norwich (26) have conceded more goals in the top-flight this season than the 24 they have shipped. At home, the Magpies need to start making this a fortress with no victories from five their this season.
Brentford will have welcomed the international break as their 2-1 loss at home to Norwich saw them slide to a fourth successive defeat. For a side who have beaten Arsenal and West Ham and drawn with Liverpool things are coming undone quickly and they are just four points above the drop zone. Away from Griffin Park, the Bees have lost just one of their five although this was their worst performance of the season (going down 3-1 at Burnley).
Newcastle vs Brentford Predictions
Backing the hosts to win this one looks a great shout given the atmosphere a new manager will bring. The Bees were poor against Burnley and Norwich and the Magpies have in Wilson, Fraser and Saint-Maximin the kind of players who could cause the London side a wealth of problems.
It would be generous to describe Ryan Fraser and his time at Newcastle as anything less than disappointing but both him and Wilson will love being re-united with Howe a manager who got the best out of them at Bournemouth. Both players will get among the goals in the next few weeks but the Scot is a much more backable price. Look also at the assists markets when released as an assist for Fraser and a goal for Wilson was a common feature of Bournemouth games under Howe.
22 December 2020- Brentford 1-0 Newcastle- League Cup
14 January 2017- Brentford 1-2 Newcastle- Championship
15 October 2016- Newcastle 3-1 Brentford- Championship
This game will mark the first top-flight meeting between the pair and only the fourth time they have met this century. Their last clash was in the 2020 League Cup (Brentford winning that one 1-0) and their last league encounter was in 2017 (Newcastle won that one).
