After a bright start to life under Ralf Rangnick, things at Man Utd have stagnated with problems both on and off the pitch. Rumours of unrest and unhappiness in the dressing room are never great and there is quite a lot of that going around at Old Trafford right now. Things aren’t being helped by what is happened on the pitch either, with Tottenham having won just one of their past four Premier League matches.

The poor run started with a draw against Newcastle in which Man Utd had to come from a goal down but a 3-1 win over Burnley had briefly settled the ship. Then Man Utd started the New Year with a 1-0 loss to Wolves and, at the weekend, they gave up a 2-0 lead to draw with Aston Villa having only narrowly beaten the Villans in the FA Cup earlier this month. As a result, Man Utd remain seven, five points behind fourth-placed West Ham and while they do have two games in hand on the Hammers so do fifth-placed Arsenal, with sixth-placed Tottenham have four.

Also struggling after a good start are Brentford, but they will probably still be happy with their position in 14th after 21 games in what is their first season in the Premier League and first year back in the top flight of English football in 65 years. Having lost just six of their opening 16 Premier League matches this season, Brentford have now lost four of their past five, only breaking a run of defeats with a win over Aston Villa.

Brentford’s past two defeats have been pretty worrying too. In midweek, the Bees were thrashed 4-1 by Southampton and again lost by a margin of three at the weekend, against Liverpool. While some will look at the Liverpool defeat as not a big deal, it’s worth remembering that Brentford managed to restrict both Chelsea and Man City to 1-0 victories and previously drew with the Reds, albeit at home. With regards to the table, Brentford don’t look in immediate danger, 10 points clear of 18th-placed Norwich but they will want to avoid sliding further down.

Brentford vs Man Utd: Match Stats

Man Utd are one of the dirtiest teams in the Premier League this season, or at least one of the most cautioned. Only Leeds and Newcastle have been shown more cards than Man Utd’s 45 this season, with the Red Devils receiving 43 yellows and two reds at an average of 2.16 per game. Brentford, on the other hand, have received on average 1.86 cards per game in the Premier LEague with 38 yellows and one red.

One of Man Utd’s perceived weaknesses of late has been their defending from set pieces, particularly corners, but they might be alright against Brentford. Only Everton and Burnley have won fewer corners than Brentford in the Premier League this season, but the Bees’ average of 3.71 per game is the worst in the division. At the same time, Man Utd average 5.25 corners per game.
