Borussia Dortmund went into this tie as favourites but Rangers are in full control after their commanding first-leg win. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men went to the Westfalenstadion and came back with a 4-2 victory, leading the German giants 3-0 just after half-time before things got a little closer. It was a win that helped continue Rangers’ good recent run having lost control of the Scottish Premiership title race.
A 4-0 defeat to Celtic at the start of February, after a draw with Ross County, saw Rangers drop below their bitter rivals in the table but they bounced back with four straight wins across all competitions to remain in the Scottish FA Cup and keep their Europa League hopes alive. At the weekend, they were held by Dundee United in the league, but all focus will be on Dortmund’s visit on Thursday.
For Dortmund, the defeat to Rangers last week was just a continuation of their recent form which hasn’t been the best. The German side have lost three of their past six games across all competitions, and the losses have been pretty damning. The first was a DFB-Pokal exit to second-tier St Pauli, then Bayer Leverkusen beat them 5-2 at home before Rangers also silenced the Westfalenstadion.
Dortmund did bounce back at the weekend, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 6-0, and they’ll be needing a similar performance at Ibrox to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

Rangers vs Borussia Dortmund: Match Stats
Alfredo Morelos was among the scorers in the 4-2 win last week and made himself a bit of history along the way. The Colombian is now Rangers’ all-time leading scorer in major UEFA competitions, netting 14 goals. In fact, since he made his debut in the Europa League in October 2018, only Bruno Fernandes and Munas Dabbur (16 goals each) have scored more goals in the competition than Morelos.
Last week’s game had 10 corners, with Dortmund winning four and Rangers six, but that was a slight anomaly for the Scottish side. In their seven Europa League games across the campaign, Rangers average just 3.43 corners per match, conceding 4.57.

Although this isn’t a fixture played too often, Rangers have an excellent record against Borussia Dortmund. The 4-2 victory last week was their fourth victory over Dortmund with their sole defeat coming in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round, losing the second leg and the tie on penalties.
