At the halfway stage of this play-off semi-final, there is no separating Barnsley and Bolton after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Nicky Cadden gave Barnsley the lead just after the hour mark but it only lasted a few minutes before Dion Charles equalised.

Barnsley are hoping for an immediate return to the Championship after their relegation last season in what was a time of turmoil. Just a year before they were in the playoffs, playing for a chance to reach the Premier League, only losing to Swansea in the semi-finals. But they re-found their footing in League One and shouldn’t be in the third tier for too long.

A spot in the play-offs may not have seemed too possible early on as Barnsley won just six of their first 15 games, losing six and going on a run of four games without scoring. But they turned things around just before the mini-break and lifted themselves way up the table with 14 wins from their final 21 matches.

Bolton, meanwhile, secured fifth in the league thanks to a late surge, winning three of their final four games while others around them faltered. This is Bolton’s second year back in League one after their promotion in 2021, and they recorded a respectable finish in their first campaign, finishing 10 points off the playoffs. Sure, a name like Bolton may be expected to be higher, but this is a Trotters side essentially restarting. Now, Bolton are looking to be in the Championship for the first time since 2018/19, the start of their downfall.

Barnsley vs Bolton match stats

As mentioned, Barnsley got the scoring underway in the first leg and they’ll be hoping to use that to their advantage in the second leg as they look to make it to Wembley. Barnsley have scored first in six of their past 10 league games, including the playoffs.

Devante Cole was the provider for Barnsley in the first leg but the Tykes will be looking to their man main to get amongst the goals on Friday. The Englishman has scored 15 goals in League One this season, more than any other Barnsley player.
