Nottingham Forest were tipped to take the Premier League by storm after investing heavily during the summer window, but Steve Cooper’s men have struggled to get going. That certainly hasn’t affected their cup form, though, with The Tricky Trees recently beating Tottenham to set up this last-16 tie against Blackburn.
In fact, it was a positive end to Forest’s pre-World Cup schedule, with that cup win over Spurs coming either side of a 2-2 draw with Brentford and a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. It’s an invaluable three-game unbeaten run that should give the club plenty of confidence heading into the second half of the campaign.
Blackburn are aiming to emulate Forest and gain promotion to the Premier League this season, with Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men currently third in the Championship. But, he will no doubt be eyeing up a quarter-final place in the EFL Cup, having recently eliminated West Ham from the competition.

Nottingham Forest have certainly struggled to build team chemistry this term, a natural by-product of their invest-heavy transfer policy. And that may be reflected by the fact Cooper’s men have collected 36 yellow cards in the Premier League so far, the third-most of any club. On the unforgiving terrain of Ewood Park, expect plenty of strong challenges to be flying in.
The Riversiders will be looking to avoid a physical tussle, and hoping to get the job done through pure technical skill. In Ben Brereton Diaz, they certainly have a forward capable of producing a moment of magic from nothing. The Chile international is second only to Viktor Gyokeres (10) in the Championship’s ‘Golden Boot’ race this campaign (nine), while only Swansea’s Joel Piroe (65) has had more shots than him (63).

During Forest’s promotion triumph, they famously (or infamously) lost six of their opening seven games in the Championship, with the board ultimately replacing Chris Hughton with Cooper as a result.
