Tony Mowbray returns to Ewood Park for the first time since leaving Blackburn at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season. He served out a respectable five-year tenure in Lancashire, but will now be hoping to bite the hand that once fed him when he travels with his Sunderland side to take on Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Rovers.

The newly-promoted club have made a drama-free return to second tier football, currently sitting ninth in the Championship table with just four defeats from their opening 14 matches. Mowbray knows a win for his side could lift them into the top six depending on results elsewhere.

Blackburn meanwhile are looking to consolidate their place in the play-off positions. Tomasson has proven a more than capable successor to Mowbray in these early stages, with the Lancashire club currently fifth in the table and just the single point off table-topping Burnley.

Blackburn Rovers v Sunderland match stats

Alex Pritchard has taken his League One form into the Championship and will be looking to continue the good work he’s so far produced this campaign. The playmaking wizard is second only to Luton Town’s James Bree (39) for chances created this season (35), and he will be expected to carry that form into Tuesday night’s encounter.

For Blackburn, Ben Brereton Diaz could be their difference-maker. The Chile international has bagged seven goals this season, placing him behind only Hull City’s Oscar Estupinan and Norwich City’s Joshua Sargent (both eight) in the Championship’s ‘Golden Boot’ equivalent. Mowbray knows his talents exceptionally well, but keeping a lid on him is certainly a task easier said than done.
