Barnsley vs Chelsea: Predictions
Barnsley may not have the same illustrious history as their Thursday night FA Cup opponents Chelsea, but they can at least call upon two famous victories in the two previous meetings between the clubs in this competition.
In 1989, the Tykes ran out 4-0 winners at Oakwell in the Third Round and more recently in 2008, a Kayode Odejayi header won the South Yorkshire side a Quarter Final tie and a similarly famous performance would be required if they’re to repeat the feat on Thursday night.
As things stand, Barnsley are performing above expectations in the Championship and occupy a comfortable mid-table spot following back-to-back draws with Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest ahead of this tie and they’ve earned plaudits for their style of play since Valerien Ismael took over as manager in October.
Chelsea themselves have a new manager and Thomas Tuchel has enjoyed a fine start to life at Stamford Bridge. After a goalless draw with Wolves in his first fixture, the Blues have since managed a trio of wins over Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United.
The FA Cup will provide possibly the most realistic opportunity for Tuchel to gain some silverware in his first season in England so expect a strong team to be fielded at Oakwell.
Barnsley vs Chelsea: Match Stats
Chelsea have looked strong at the back since Tuchel’s arrival, conceding just one goal in their first four games under the Germany boss. We fancy them to keep a clean sheet against a Barnsley outfit that have struggled for goals at times this season and failed to score in 11 of their Championship games this term.
Callum Hudson-Odoi is clearly liked by the new boss and he’ll be keen to put in an FA Cup performance similar to the one that saw him score a hat-trick against a Championship side in the shape of Luton Town in the last round. He averages over 2 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League and should manage at least three against second-tier opponents.
24 Aug 1997 – Barnsley 0-6 Chelsea – Premier League
31 Jan 1998 – Chelsea 2-0 Barnsley – Premier League
08 Mar 2008 – Barnsley 1-0 Chelsea – FA Cup
23 Sep 2020 – Chelsea 6-0 Barnsley – League Cup
As you might expect, Chelsea have had the better of Barnsley historically and when the two teams met in the EFL Cup earlier this season, the Blues ran out 6-0 winners. That said, the Tykes have beaten the Blues in the two previous FA Cup meetings in 1989
