It’s make or break for Barcelona in the Champions League this week with the Blaugrana potentially dropping out at the group stage for the second year running, and it’s not even in their own hands. Barcelona must rely on Viktoria Plzen at least taking a point from Inter Milan while also beating Bayern Munich to avoid the humiliation of a group stage exit.
The Blaugrana had the perfect start to the group stage thanks to a 5-1 win over Viktoria Plzen, the minnows of this pool, but that was where their campaign peaked. Facing Bayern in their next match, Barcelona lost 2-0 at the Allianz Arena and followed that up with a 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are one of the teams to have already qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League but will now be looking to secure top spot. The German side are five points clear of Inter Milan and a win here would do it, though a draw would also be enough if Inter drop points.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side are one of two teams still perfect in the Champions League group stage this season and opened the campaign with a 2-0 win over Inter Milan, before the aforementioned victory against Barcelona. Bayern then tightened their control of the group, and secured qualification, thanks to back-to-back wins over Viktoria Plzen, scoring nine goals and conceding twice.
