Austria secured their spot at Euro 2020 having finished as runners-up in Group G. Franco Foda’s men finished the qualifying games on 19 points which proved enough to fend off Sunday’s opposition, North Macedonia, who finished on 14 points and secured their spot at the tournament via the play-offs.

North Macedonia enter the tournament in fine form having not lost in their last four games and winning three of those games. The highlight of their Euro preparations actually came in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers with a stunning and unexpected 2-1 victory over the international powerhouse in Joachim Löw’s Germany.

England fans should be fairly familiar with this Austria side after the Three Lions prevailed at the Riverside Stadium against them just last week. Foda’s side proved to be far from a pushover with the likes of RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer proving a constant threat to England’s backline and forcing a stunning save from Jordan Pickford to deny Das Team an equaliser.

The Netherlands go into this summer’s tournament as the clear favourites with the bookies to take Group C. However, the second spot certainly seems one of the most open across all of the groups. The game on Sunday is going to provide both sides the opportunity to set the tone for the rest of their group games with three points looking like they will be the only option for both teams.

In the two meetings between these nations in the qualifying stages for this summer’s tournament, it was Austria who prevailed on both occasions. A 4-1 victory in the first meeting was followed up by a narrow 2-1 win in Vienna. Despite an emphatic victory in Skopje, Foda’s men were unable to keep a clean sheet and it was the same story in Vienna having conceded a 93rd-minute consolation goal.

The two games in the qualifying stages for the Euros provided early goals on both occasions. North Macedonia took the lead in the first clash after just 18 minutes and in the second game which was held in Vienna, David Alaba provided his side with an early advantage with just eight minutes on the clock.
