The wait for the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup is nearly over, with Thursday marking the start of the tournament as co-hosts New Zealand and Australia get the action underway against Norway and the Republic of Ireland respectively.
Australia have been drawn into an interesting Group A, containing Ireland, Nigeria and Canada and will be aiming to make it into the knockouts for the fifth tournament in a row, having last failed to progress beyond the initial phase in 2003.
Tony Gustavsson will feel he has a squad capable of reaching the latter stages of this competition, with Sam Kerr, Hayley Raso, Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley and Ellie Carpenter all players upon whom he can call on.
Vera Pauw’s Girls in Green meanwhile made history in the qualifiers by becoming the first Irish team to make a Women’s World Cup. This will be the country’s debut in the tournament, and Pauw will be determined to make it a memorable bow.
