Without the imperious Sam Kerr co-hosts Australia overcame Ireland 1-0 in their Group B opener, winning a Women’s World Cup curtain-raiser for only the second time. Stand-in captain Steph Catley scored from the spot after half-time to secure a vital win. Australia had opted to keep Kerr’s injury secret for two days, only breaking the news when the team sheets were released, but head coach Tony Gustavsson pointed to a recent 1-0 friendly win against France, in which their only goal was scored after both Kerr and Caitlin Foord had been subbed off, as proof they are not a one-woman team. They will also have to make do without forward option Mary Fowler after she was ruled out through concussion.

Nigeria, meanwhile, picked up a surprise goalless draw with seventh-ranked Canada during which goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie denied prolific goalscorer Christine Sinclair from 12 yards. That stalemate extended Nigeria’s undefeated streak to four games (three wins and one draw), all coming against fellow WWC participants. However, they’ve been held scoreless in six of their last seven WWC games (one win, one draw and five losses), including a 2-0 loss to Australia in the 2015 edition.
