One of the reasons for France’s success at this summer’s World Cup so far has been the strike partnership of Eugenie Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani. The latter was a doubt for the tournament due to injury but made it back in time and has scored four goals so far, including a hat-trick against Panama. Last time out, the new Lyon signing scored one and provided two assists as France beat Morocco 4-0.

France suffered in front of goal in their first game at the 2023 Women’s World Cup but they have found their form of late. First, Les Bleues put six past Panama before hitting Morocco for four, with Eugenie Le Sommer netting two against the latter. Australia, meanwhile, have scored nine goals at the World Cup this summer with a pretty even split of four in the first half and five after the break.

Australia’s dreams of winning their own World Cup are still on, with the Matildas reaching the quarter-finals for the fourth time. After bowing out at the group stage in their first three appearances, Australia made it to the quarter-finals for three World Cups running between 2007 and 2015, but bowed out at the last 16 stage in 2019. This time around, after topping their group thanks to wins over Ireland and Canada, Australia were drawn against Group D runners-up Denmark. And there was another victory for the Matildas, who won 2-0 thanks to goals from Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso.

France look like a completely different team free from the shackles and controversy of Corinne Diacre and may be one of the best-placed teams to win the World Cup this summer. Les Bleues may have opened the tournament with a goalless draw against Jamaica but that proved to be a good result as the Reggae Girlz made it to the last 16 without conceding a goal. In their next game, France beat Brazil 2-1 to take control of Group F and top spot was secured thanks to a 6-3 victory over Panama. Many neutrals were hoping for an upset when France took on Morocco in the last 16, but Herve Renard’s side had no time for fairytales with a 4-0 victory seeing them through to the quarter-finals.

Sam Kerr made her return from injury with a cameo appearance in the last 16 win over Denmark, so the question now is whether the Australian captain will start.
